About FELDENKRAIS AWARENESS THROUGH MOVEMENT CLASSES:
_______What you'll need (if you are not in person at the studio):
-A firm, flat, padded place to lie down that is warm and comfortable. (If you have pain lying on a firm surface you can add more padding or you can try it in bed.)
______some basic info about taking Feldenkrais classes:
*Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement classes utilize very small and gentle movements to improve movement ability. Often this lessens pain and awakens pleasure in movement. Most of the time we start lying on the back. We start lying down in order to give our habitual muscular habits a rest. Those habitual muscular habits are usually enacted in standing and sitting. So we do movements on the floor that require less work so our habits can soften. Then we use awareness of qualities of movement to expand movement possibilities.
*Awareness Through Movement is a very different model than most other classes and takes some rewiring to get used to.... (More movement oriented, less position oriented. More self regulated, less teacher centered. More rest, less effort.)
* If anything causes pain, do less, or just imagine it. In Feldenkrais it is not beneficial to push through any kind of pain. Therefore we learn to modify the scope and direction of movement to wire our brains for healthy pleasurable movement. We do not use stretching or forcing in any lessons. If you have pain in any area while lying we would want you to adjust the position so that you don't have pain. The only caveat here is if the pain is constant and doesn't change with regard to movement or position. In that case you can stay in the position with the pain as long as it doesn't get worse. Same goes for pain while moving.
*Remember to
take lots of rests.
be creative about modifying--
doing the lesson in your imagination is just as useful as doing it in 3D action, whenever there's discomfort it's a good opportunity to flex your imagination muscles...
and for everyone but especially those of you who are listening to the audio after the live class, please don't hesitate to ask me (phone/text/email) if you have any questions about the class... When I'm seeing you on the zoom screen classroom I can modify my instructions to help if I see someone who is interpreting in a different way, but I can't do that if I can't see you! So please ask if you are confused at all.
*all of the above are guidelines to get you started- the real understanding emerges within yourself as you practice
